Theo drove us home entirely with his left hand because his right was holding mine. I was still in disbelief. There were so many questions circulating in my mind: You’re into me? You’re into guys? When the hell did that happen?

But I didn’t ask them. It was…well, it was the dream come true, really. I told Theo my truth, and he chased me down in the woods and kissed me. Not just that, he told me he had a crush on me. Our hands rested on my heart! It was so perfect.

It wasn’t the seedy, transactional orgasms I’d gotten used to since going to college. Theo and I savored each other—inhaled each other’s essence with a heartpounding fervor that comes when you absolutely need a person. I couldn’t believe it happened.

But it did.

I even asked if it was real because I didn’t believe it. My mind couldn’t reconcile with the fact that I was in Theo’s warm, powerful embrace, and he was kissing me and feeling me like a lover does. It felt unbelievable yet natural at the same time. We just…fit.

The car pulled into the Morettis’ driveway and came to a stop. Theo and I looked at each other for a second before he leaned in and gave me a super quick kiss on the lips.

“Sorry. Had to.”

I knew my smile was big and stupid, but I couldn’t help it. But, as I looked at Theo’s house, reality soon washed over me. “How do you wanna do this?” I asked.

Theo took a deep breath and replied, “I was hoping you’d have some ideas.”

Well, fuck. I had no idea how to approach this. I was flummoxed. “I… I have no clue how to navigate this.”

Theo faced forward, his face contemplative, as he drummed his fingers against the steering wheel. He then turned to me and said, “I care about you. I do. But, I’m not sure if I’m ready to talk to my folks about this yet. I hope that is okay. I will be ready, I promise you that. But, I think I just need to settle into…us. Before I tell Mom and Dad.”

A big coming-out party wasn’t exactly what I had in mind either. I just didn’t know how he wanted me to behave around his folks, but this kind of gave me an idea. “So, friends in front of family. Something else behind closed doors?” I asked.

“Lovers behind closed doors,” he corrected. My heart literally skipped a beat when he said it. He looked at me for another moment, then added, “Only if you’re comfortable with that. I’m not ashamed of how I feel about you, and if you need me to come clean to people, I’ll do that. For you, I’ll do that.”

I would have kissed him, but we were in his parents’ driveway. Instead, I held his hand, making sure it was out of view from prying eyes. “I’m okay with this. Really.”

Theo smiled, visibly relieved. “Thank you.” He squeezed my hand tighter, and the butterflies took flight in my stomach.
